You are allowed to fish nearly on all the lakes of the area with the fishing permit of the fishing ground. The largest lakes of the ground are Pääjärvi, Kyyjärvi, Karankajärvi, and Kalmarinselkä. There are several rapids between the lakes and you need to buy separate permits to fish on them. The biggest lakes in the area are very wide open lakes with only few islands. Mattilanselkä, for example, is about 5 km wide. It is wise not to go there on a small boat if the wind is strong. The average depth of lake Kalmarinselkä is about 6 metres, but the other lakes in the area are quite shallow. There are no charts of the lakes available, nor are there any nautical routes on the lakes. The base maps of the area have contour lines on them. Nearly all the lakes are eutrophic and dark-watered and therefore there is plenty of fish in the lakes. The fish populations in the lakes are the biggest in central Finland. Cyprinid fish are the most common type of fish in the lakes. There are also plenty of small bream and pike perch in the lakes, because of the high amounts of nutrition available. Ide and burbot populations are quite strong in the lakes too. The rapids connecting the lakes to each other have been planted with lake trout, so it is possible to catch lake trout on the lakes too. Pike perch was planted in the lakes last year with great success. Lake Pääjärvi is the best place to fish pike perch. Pike perch weighting over 10 kg have been caught there. Pike perch population in lakes Kyyjärvi and Kalmarinselkä is growing very rapidly. A lot of pike perch weighting 2-4 kg have been caught on lake Kalmarinselkä. There is plenty of small pike perch on lake Kyyjärvi. Nearly on all the lakes it is possible to launch an own boat. There are well taken care of fireplaces for example on lake Kyyjärvi and Kalmarinselkä. Nearly on all lakes there are uninhabited shores where it is possible to go ashore. On the area there are also firms which serves the travelling fishermen’s. The lakes of the fishing ground are suitable for pike perch and pike trolling as well as for casting. In the winter by ice fishing it is almost sure that you catch something.
