Lake Vatiajärvi empties into lake Saravesi in Laukaa via the rapid Kuusaankoski. It is the most swift rapid in central Finland because its discharge is high and it is steep. The scenery at the rapid is very photographic:
The rapid flows in the village milieu of central Finland. You can admire the beauty of the rapid from two highway bridges which cross the rapid. The lock of the channel Kuusaa is located close to the rapids. There is also a dam at the rapid, and there are lake trout fishing shows during the fishing season.
The beginning of the fishing ground is a peaceful flow which resembles a lake. It is too dangerous to go there with a boat. There is a strong foaming rapid under the old bridge after the area above the waterfall.
The most swift part of the river is near the west shore of the river. It is better to fish near the east shore because the flow of the rapid is quite slow there. The flow of the lower part of the rapid is more slower and the fishing ground ends under the new bridge. There are few areas at the shores where fishing is forbidden.
Lake trout is the most wanted catch on the rapid Kuusaankoski. Lake trout is also able to breed in the river naturally. There are big andromous lake trout from lake Päijänne in the river. During the last few years the biggest lake trout caught from the river have weighted about 5 kg. The biggest fish have been able to escape fishermen by snapping their lines, which is not hard to believe when looking at the foams of the rapid.
It is also possible to catch grayling on the rapid Kuusankoski. Grayling are planted either as fingerlings, or as fish over the minimum size limit. Ide is the most in interesting natural fish in the rapid. There is a lot of ide weighting 1-2 kg in the rapid, especially in the beginning of the summer. Ide is an excellent fish to eat.
There are good services at the rapid Kuusankoski. There are four lean-ons and four jetties for casting in the area. Three of the jetties can be used by motion-handicapped people. There are jetties on both shores, above the rapid and in the middle of the rapid. There is a combined grill-kiosk, which is licensed to sell alcohol, near the rapid in summer.
