Lake Muuratjärvi empties into lake Päijänne via the river Muuramenjoki. The river meanders through the centre of Muurame and has both foaming rapids and quiet water areas. The sight is idyllic and park-like. The fishing ground of Muuramenjoki begins from pond Muuramenlampi. It flows quietly for 200 metres, after which a steep 300-metre long rapid begins. After the rapid the river continues as quiet water area, which is very rich in fish. If you watch carefully, you might see fish near rocks and pits in water. Part of the rapid is closed for fry production. There is a dam after the quite water area. Anadromous fish can pass the dam through the stairs that were built for fish. There is a short but powerful rapid after the dam, in which fishing is forbidden. After 300 metres the river empties into lake Päijänne. The rapids of the river Muuramenjoki are narrow, and that is why UL tackles are ideal there. Fly fishing is particularly enjoyable on Muuramenjoki. The main catch of Muuramenjoki is rainbow trout, which is planted in the river regularly during the fishing season. Muuramenjoki is one of the three rivers that empties into lake Pohjois-Päijänne. Pohjois-Päijänne is the lake from where lake trout and freshwater salmon swim up the rivers, making it possible for fishermen to catch them on the rivers. Trout can also get to the river Muuramenjoki from lake Muuratjärvi. Lake trout has been planted in the river and both trout and grayling populations have bred in a natural way. You can also catch pike from the quiet water areas of the river.
