The fishing ground is situated near the town of äänekoski. The clear and pure-watered lake Keitele empties into lake äänejärvi via the flow Häränvirta in beautiful and peaceful scenery. Häränvirta offers an excellent rapid fishing place near good services. The fishing ground has been extended on lake Keitele in 1999. The boundary of the fishing area is now between the landmark at cape ääneniemi and island Halkosaari. This extension is a good improvement, since it forbids net fishing on a wider area than before. Häränvirta begins right after the harbour, and it flows swiftly under the new footbridge. Häränvirta is 2-3 metres deep at its lowest point. In about 500 metres the flow turns stronger again. There is a line of buoys about 100 m above the highway bridge, and that’s where the border of the fishing area is too. There is a power plant 200 metres below the fishing area. The best way to fish in the fishing ground äänekosken Kalakeidas is to use a boat. Although most fishermen prefer rowing, the use of motor is allowed. There are no boats for rent in the fishing ground. You can launch your own boat from the well-equipped harbour of Mustaniemi. In summer there is a kiosk in the harbour. The services of äänekoski centre are less than 500 metres away. It is also possible to fish from the shore in the fishing ground äänekosken Kalakeidas, because there are only a few buildings on the shores. There are also jetties for fishing on the fishing ground. There are a lot of logs and three barges at the bottom of the fishing area, which makes it difficult to use deep-running lures. Lake trout is the most wanted catch at äänekosken Kalakeidas. During the last couple of years people have caught mostly anadromous fish. Lake trout in the area come either from lake Keitele or from the water systems above the fishing ground via the stairs at Kuhnamo. Lake trout and rainbow trout were planted in the area in 1999. Pike, perch and an occasional powan are the most common catches on lake äänejärvi.
