Kärnänkoski is the first and the longest rapid on the waterway between lakes Kolimajärvi and Keitele. The high fall, the length and the swiftness make the rapid Kärnänkoski very interesting and versatile to fish. The sights at Kärnänkoski vary as well. The lower part of the rapid is situated in cultural milieu and the upper part is nearly wild. There is a fireplace and a cooking cover at the upper part of the rapid Kärnänkoski. The vegetation of the shores has been made thinner in order to make walking and fishing easier. The rapid has been restored so that fish have better possibilities to breed, and fishermen can enjoy fishing more. Lake trout and grayling are typical catches on the rapid Kärnänkoski. The closeness of the big lakes Kolima (1495 km2) and Keitele (6168 km2) and the scarcity of settlement makes it possible to catch even big trout in the rapid. Grayling in the rapid breed quickly and the biggest ones caught have weighted over 1 kg. Lake trout fry and grayling fry have been planted in the rapid, as well as lake trout, all over the minimum size limit.
