In the open lake Ristinselkä in lake Päijänne is the deepest place of Finish lakes which is 93,5 metres. It is the second largest lake in Finland. The lake is quite narrow and 119 km long. The water quality, the trophicstate and scenery varies between the parts of the lake. The north part of the lake (open lakes Poronselkä and Ristinselkä) and the area near Jämsä are more eutrophic than the oligotrophic and clear watered middle and south parts of the lake. The shores near the open lakes are often rocky. The shores which are sheltered from the wind are quite rushy. In the bays there are often sandy beaches. On the shores of the north part of lake Päijänne there are a lot of settlement. Beginning in the middle of the lake in Korpilahti there are enough uninhabited shore on the lake. On the lake there is a plenty of harbours and well taken care of fireplaces. In the lake there are marked navigation routes and depths are also sounded. The fishing ground of lake Pohjois-Päijänne is one of the largest in Finland. It begins in Jyväskylä and ends in lake Keski-Päijänne. Lake trout is one of the most wanted catch in lake Päijänne. The lake trout population is taken care of with large plantations. The rapids which empties into lake Päijänne have actively restored. There have removed obstackles which disturbs the run of the fish to the spawning area. There has also been stocked freshwater salmon in the lake. Pike and perch populations are excellent in the lake. Pike perch population is nowadays quite strong and it is a common catch on lake Pohjois-Päijänne.
