The river Pengerjoki was opened for leisure fishing in the summer of 1996. The river has been restored to its natural state by the fly fishing club Petäjäveden Perhokalastajat, who have also planted fish in the river. The fishing ground of the river Pengerjoki consists of eight separate rapids as well as the quiet water areas and races between the rapids. The total length of the fishing ground is 20 km, so there is enough room for everyone to fish. An excellent way to fish there is to use a canoe. The rapids are far away from each other, but there are good roads connecting them. The rapids are from the bottom to the top: Pengerkoski, Karjukoski, Riuttakoski, Alakoski, Kalliokoski, Leppäkoski, Katajakoski, and a rapid without a name. There are several races on the river Pengerjoki. The last rapid of river Pengerjoki is Pengerkoski and it is nearly one kilometre long and quite wide. A shelter has been built above the rapid, where you can take a break and look at what’s going on at the rapid. There is a well-maintained lean-on with firewood at the rapid Leppäkoski. There are only few buildings at the shores of the rapid. There some areas at the rapids Riuttakoski and Karjukoski where fishing is forbidden (see the map). The fish population in the river Pengerjoki mainly consists of lake trout and grayling which have been planted into the river. The biggest planted fish weight over 4 kg. There are also anadromous lake trout from lake Jämsänvesi which is below the rapid.
