The rapids Heijostenkosket belongs to upper part of the waterway of Saarijärvi. The rapid is situated between the rapids Kouheroistenkoski and Tuhmakoski. The rapids Heijostenkosket consists of five rapids, as well as race and quiet water areas between the rapids. The rapids are Vaajakoski, Myllykoski, Pitkäkoski (also called Heijostenkoski), Haarakoski, and Rakinkoski. The total length of all the rapids is about 2,5 km and it is the longest fishing ground in Central Finland. The rapids Heijostenkosket flows in peaceful wilderness and there are very few settlements at the shores. There are no bridges crossing the rapids. There are a lot of fishing places on the rapids, so you will always be able to find a place that is not crowded with other fishermen. The most common place of arrival at the rapids is the area between the rapids Myllykoski and Pitkäkoski. There is a cooking cover with a stove and tables. There are also two cottages in the area for fishermen. Accommodation in the cottages is free. There are also good places for tenting in the area, and it also possible to park your caravan there. The rapids of the waterway of Saarijärvi have been used for log floating from 1860´s to 1960´s. Due to this, nearly all the beds in the rapids have been modified to suit the needs of log floating. After the log floating stopped, there have been attempts to restore the rapids closer to their natural state. This process of restoration will take place before the end of this century on the rapids Heijostenkosket. The whole restoration process aims at creating better possibilities for fish to breed and for fishermen to fish.
