Keihärinkoski is the lowest rapid on the waterway between lakes Kivijärvi and Keitele. Other rapids of the waterway are the famous rapid Huopana and the rapid Hilmonkoski. The rapids on this waterway are the swiftest ones in the area. For example, the total amount of water that flows in the rapids between lakes Kolima and Keitele (Kärnä, Kellaa and Kymö), is one third smaller than between the rapids from Kivijärvi to Keitele. The water in Keihärinkoski is a bit brownish because of the swamp nearby. There is enough water in the rapid for the whole fishing season. The rapid flows through the village of Keihärinkoski and under the new bridge. A cooking cover has been built for fishermen by the rapid. There is also a shop nearby and places for accommodation. The rapid Keihärinkoski is wide and hasn’t got any high falls. It has been restored to its natural state in order to provide better conditions for both fish and fishermen. It is possible to fish lake trout on the rapid Keihärinkoski. Formerly there were only anadromous lake trout in the rapid, but now lake trout has been planted there. It is also possible to catch grayling in the rapid, because they have been planted there for several years.
